Broccoli

Since returning from the US, we have had a couple of meals that - except for the rice - came completely from our garden. We ate eggplant, onions, herbs, broccoli, and couple of other things. I cannot take any credit as Danny is the gardener. I have never seen broccoli sold in Uganda - the seeds came from the UK. Here is one of our broccoli plants....

I was planning on salad for dinner, so please pass the broccoli :) Congrats to Danny on having a green thumb!

As for fat ... well I think maybe they need to slim down a bit and we need to strike a balance between fat and stick-figures. I've lost quite a bit of weight over the last year by just cutting down (not out) carbs, so I'm beginning to think that may be a key for Westerners. We eat SO many snacks and crackers! I used to .. I'm amazed now at how much I don't miss them anymore.I hope Uganda manages to miss that habit.

Summer has finally arrived in the Plains, along with storms, and deer in the backyard :) This is preferable to Chicago though, where they ended up with a cougar in the city.

I hope you have a wonderful salad from your own garden! Bon appetit!

I'm lucky Danny is a good gardener and a great cook. Lots of soups and stir fries and curries.

However, if we go for the free college lunch it's carbs on top of carbs. The poorest Ugandans don't seem to go hungry but their diet is horrible. They don't seem to understand that growing children need protein, not just carbs. They eat tons of Matoke everyday which is solid carbs, cheap, easy to grow and filling.

Having lived for a year on a vegetable farm in Alsace, my compliments on the lovely broc.

Mmmm.

Composting the leaves?

Tomatoes are flowering here and the strawberries are turning red.

Wahey!

Quite chilly, though. Jackets and jumpers.

"Why do you read books if you are not studying?"

Do you think this is because they are such a social culture and reading is so solitary? Or is it that they have so much physical work to do that they don't have time? Or that they could never have access to the kinds of books that you would read for pleasure, etc ?

Have had a good time reading your blog and viewing your pics and trying to fathom what it is really like.

Are there many other mzungus there or many other volunteers?

I wish I had your veggie and herb garden. I've only got a few things planted this year and it's not as vast as yours. The broccoli looks great, I keep looking at it think it would be great with some hummous or plain, lightly blanched.
