Technology in the classroom

On our recent trip to the US we purchased a projector. Its primary purpose is to enable Danny to give better presentations to his classes. All the tutors here use flip chart paper to teach.

Danny has been planning his lessons on his laptop using PowerPoint which can include photos, animations, sound, music, even movie clips. This is hooked up to the projector and shown on a large screen which the college owns but doesn't use. The students have never been exposed to anything like this and they love it.

As these students are training to be teachers this also shows them the possibilities for teaching in the future.

The projector also serves the purpose of showing movies in our house. Our living room is tiny so with the projector and the screen it gets very crowded, especially if we have a guest or two. It's like sitting in the front row of the cinema.

When we find bigger and better speakers we will begin to show movies to the students in the assembly hall.

Hi Annie and Danny,
It sounds like you're having a great cultural experience! Do you have a flickr stream for images?

I'd like to extend an invitation to the teachers you're working with and any others you many know, who are working in limited technology and connectivity classrooms in Uganda to join in a Professional Development project that I'm just starting called the "Connecting Within the Unconnected Classroom" - you can find out more about it here: http://unconnectedclassroom.wetpaint.com/

By the way, I came across your blog from a google alert but will now follow through and sign up for VSO - it sounds like a great idea!!

Sue,

I will have my husband check out your website.

On this campus we have no landlines, no internet and ancient computers, although my husband is looking for funding for new computers and the internet.

There is a link in the sidebar to my Flickr album.

Thanx got the Flickr link have requested a few of yours for our "unconnected Classroom" flickr group:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/cuc2/

What I'm hoping will happen with the project is that teachers in situations like yours will gain a group of global mentors to support and encourage connectivity and technology in realistic situations. It will be a challenge for those who are used to high speed and ubiquituous computers to adapt to a situation where there is "no landlines, no internet and ancient computers" but I'm hoping there are some education technologists who are interested in taking up the challenge. The focus will be on 21st Century skills - which a review will show that most do not need the technology nor connectivity...that's a bonus!

I'm hoping that by using the technology to investigate possible solutions, teachers in developing countries will increase their technology skills, perhaps at first through the communication challenges our team will face in just investigating the issues. Eventually, my hope is that the team will find ways that technology can reach the teacher's classroom but only if the solution is contextual good fit. I've been writing about the project on my blog here: newmediaworkshops.com/telblog/

I'm only a team of 'one' right now so who knows what the future holds! ;-)
